Reina Roberts

I've been at Venice High School since 2005, first as a student teacher in the Spring and then as a full-time faculty member beginning in September of that year. I am thrilled and honored to be here, teaching in the World Language/Global Studies Magnet. Social studies has always been one of my passions, even when I was working in the field of graphic design prior to earning my teaching credential. I'm happy to have made the move. (And I still do graphic design on the side.) I also enjoy the energy of being around young folks, watching them learn new things about the world while making connections between curriculum and their own lives.

I also lead the student and faculty-based recycling program at Venice High School. Several years ago, two ambitious students, Joel Coleman and Jamie Kuei, came to me about starting a recycling program here at Venice. Today, Joel and Jamie have moved on to "be the change" (as Gandhi would say) in other ways. At Venice High, we still work with the City of Los Angeles and the administration here to create opportunities for recycling campus-wide through the Breakfast in the Classroom program, having replaced nearly half of our trash dumpsters for recycling bins. The best part of all is that it is facilitated by our students. We are now one of the schools leading LAUSD in recycling on campus. Please contact me if you are interested in becoming part of this movement, or simply need supplies in your classroom in order to participate.

I was previously employed as a professional graphic designer and art director at top New York and Los Angeles companies such as Chiat/Day Advertising, Parade Magazine, Dance Magazine, Los Angeles Downtown News, Herbalife and 1-800-DENTIST from 1987 through 2002. I also still do a bit of freelance graphic design, but teaching keeps me pretty busy.
