Mr. Michael Smith, Math Teacher, WASC Coordinator, Students Run LA Leader

Hello!   Thank you for visiting my page. I am currently in my 21st year teaching. I have happily taught at Venice High School since the Fall of 2008 and previously taught at Mark Twain Middle School from 1997 to 2008. During my career I have taught all the core subjects at one time or another, however at Venice have been teaching math. This year I am teaching two Algebra 1 classes, two Geometry classes, and am the WASC Coordinator. Outside of the classroom, I happily lead the Students Run LA (commonly known as SRLA)  program here at Venice in which we train students and fellow teachers for the yearly Los Angeles Marathon. I am currently in my ninth year leading the program at Venice and eleventh year altogether with SRLA. I was recently awarded the STAR Leadership Award (2014 - 2015 school year) by the Students Run LA organization.  It is truly an honor to be an educator at Venice High School and there is no where I would rather teach than here!

I received my Bachelor's Degree from UCLA, my Master's Degree from National University and my California Teaching Credential from California State University: Northridge. I was born and raised in Los Angeles and other than living in Colorado for two years, have spent my entire life living in the Los Angeles area. Outside of school I have several hobbies and interests. I try to live a healthy lifestyle running frequently and participating in other types of fitness. I love hiking, traveling, going to movies, theatre, the beach, watching planes take off and land from LAX (yes really!), visiting state capitol buildings (hope to hit all 50 - that's me in Juneau, AK to the left), and spending time with family, good friends, and my dogs. I've also recently gotten a lot more into reading.

If you would like to contact me, you may send me an email attached to this ( or call the main office and leave a message. Generally I am able to respond to email quicker, but either is fine. In addition, I utilize Jupiter Grades in which you can check the progress of your son/daughter in my class. I am happy to answer any questions that you may have.

Thank you for visiting my web page. I'd like to wish all the wonderful students of Venice High a great school year and best wishes always.  Go Gondos!
