A Message from Our Principal

Hello Parents and Venice High Community,

Thank you for looking at our excellent website. My name is Gabriel A. Griego and I am the very proud principal of the famous Venice High School.

Venice High School (VHS) has a rich history of academic, athletic and artistic success, which dates back over 100 years. The VHS community has many reasons to be proud: a well-recognized array of academic, athletic, co-curricular programs and a dedicated staff of accomplished professionals. VHS aligns with the LAUSD strategic plan to prepare students to be 21st-century learners. We must continue to establish rich connections between the high school experience and the world beyond our classroom walls. Through the highest levels of professionalism, dedication, and partnership, we will achieve these goals.

As you can review in our website, our students have the opportunity to study in one of the six following small learning communities: the World Language and Global Studies Magnet --30 years in existence and led by Ms. Tracy Nomachi, the Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Medicine, (STEMM) Magnet led by Brent Rojo, the Sports Medicine Academy led by our own 2017-2018 California State Teacher of the year Kirsten Farrell, the Academy of Law and Public Service led by VHS alumnus Brian Blesser, and the Media, Arts, Technology Academy led by Ruth Greene. Ms. Greene is also the coordinator for the School for Advanced Studies, the honors program for non-magnet students, and the Gifted and Talented Education program for the whole school.

This year we welcome the first class of 9th graders into our Dual Language Program in Spanish and in Mandarin. This adds to the many pathways our students can pursue to be college and career-ready when they graduate. VHS also has 11 National Board Certified Teachers who are dedicated in their profession to provide the best practices and innovative strategies in their instruction.

VHS is committed to fostering a culture that provides every student with a safe and welcoming environment as well as a variety of opportunities to support student success. Success is never accomplished in isolation. It is essential that our community be aware of the instructional emphasis that underscores everything we do as a school. Our school-wide points of focus for the 2018-19 school year are academic achievement, collaboration, and community awareness. The excellent team of teachers, counselors, support personnel and administrators at VHS are dedicated to helping students develop and achieve their individual goals. Administrators and counselors have an open door policy for students with school-related concerns or personal issues. We value your feedback and encourage members of our school community to approach us with ideas that can contribute to our vision.

Please get involved in our school, as we offer many opportunities. Our alumni association is one of the oldest and biggest this side of the Mississippi River, which last year raised over $120,000 for student scholarships. We have active Friends of the Magnet, PTSA and Booster associations that our parents are welcome to join. We also have our mandated School Site Council (SSC) and English Learning Advisory Committee (ELAC), so more parents can have opportunities to join school leaders in approving the spending of federal funds for academic achievement for socially disadvantaged students.

I am excited about the partnerships we will build in the upcoming year and beyond. Please continue to view our website and follow us on social media for all updated information. Through teamwork and valuing outside perspectives, I am committed to making Venice High School the best possible place for students, staff, and the community. I wish you the very best this school year. Go Gondos!

Gabriel A. Griego,

Very Proud Principal of the Famous Venice High School
