Auditorium Repairs Project

June 24, 2019
Below is a summary update to parents, staff, neighbors, and the community-at-large as we
continue our $1.7 million Auditorium Repair
project at Venice High School.

Interior of historic school auditorium

Background and Scope:

  • In May of 2016, the Venice HS Auditorium was deemed unsafe by the Office of Environmental Health and Safety due to deteriorating crown molding on walls and ceiling. Venice HS is a historically eligible campus and the crown molding is a character defining feature of the auditorium.
  • On December 12, 2017 the LAUSD Board of Education approved a project to address the conditions.
  • The project will repair, replace and preserve the crown molding throughout the auditorium. A modern anchoring system approved by the Division of the State Architect (DSA) will be used to anchor the old and new crown molding sections onto the walls.
  • The project will ensure the building is safe and retains its eligibility as a historic resource.

We have completed the following:

  • An architect has been hired to assess existing conditions and carry out design of the repairs.
  • A Site Analysis Report including a Plaster Molding Assessment and Treatment Report which considers the protection plans for the historic elements of the auditorium has been developed.

Immediate Next Steps:

  • Completion of the engineering and design solutions for repairs.
  • Review and approval by DSA.
  • Construction is projected to begin in the summer of 2020 and the auditorium is expected to be available for students’ use in the 2021-22 school year.
